Critic's Choice Awards
And the second award show of 2019 goes to… The Critic’s Choice Awards! Yup, it’s award season and the first award goes out to the wonderful Lady Gaga for Best Song. This is going to be kind of a live streaming blog because the nominations are almost the same as the Golden Globes, so you already kind of have a general idea of who’s nominated. The Critic’s Choice Awards is live streaming tonight, January 13, 2019, giving out prizes to 25 film and 17 TV categories. It’s hosted tonight in Los Angeles, California by Taye Diggs. But, let’s get live streaming!
So, I already told you who won best song; Lady Gaga for “Shallow” in the movie A Star Is Born. Of course, though she deserves it, now the best young actor/actress award was received by Elsie Fisher, who is only 15 years old, for her role in Eighth Grade. In fact, she was actually the voice for Agnes in the first two movies of Despicable Me. The third award given out tonight is for best supporting actor and it goes to Mahershala Ali for Green Book.
The cast of Bohemian Rhapsody gives out the award for best-supporting actress, given to Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk. Among the nominees were, Amy Adams for Vice, Claire Foy for First Man, Nicole Baldwin for Boy Erase, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz both for The Favorite. Best Sci-fi or horror movie is the next category up, presented by the hilarious Sarah Silverman. And the Critic’s Choice Award goes to A Quiet Place which only has five minutes of dialogue, so eat your popcorn quietly or maybe not at all. There were a handful of films that received awards given out on the red carpet that were also recognized, like best action movie going to Mission: Impossible - Fallout.
Award winner, Viola Davis presents the next award, the #SeeHer Award, and this year’s honoree is Claire Foy. This is such an important award being given out, over 1,000 brands are coming together to see that by 2020 young girls and women can be reflected as they truly are. This is the third annual #SeeHer award given out in which Viola Davis was the second winner of this award given out last year. Foy said, “It was hard for me to accept this award because I feel like I don’t have anything to offer, but one thing I can offer is to be myself.”
Black Panther, Widows, and Vice are just some of the nominees for the Best Acting Ensemble category but ended up going to The Favorite. Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for TV goes to, Darren Criss for his role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Now, the best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for TV goes to, Amy Adams AND Patricia Arquette. Yeah, I said ‘AND’ it was a tie I think this might be the only tie I’ve ever seen at an award show, I feel like this is life-changing.
Ben Stiller is the next presenter at the awards tonight, he’s presenting Best Actress in a Comedy and the critique’s choice is Olivia Coleman The Favorite. He’s also presenting Best Actor in a Comedy which goes to, Christian Bale for Vice who said, “I’m surprised that this movie was considered a comedy because it’s more of a tragedy.” Once again, Stiller presents Best Comedy which goes to, Crazy Rich Asians.
Now, I’m just going to skip to the end in which the best of the best categories come. So the Best Actress goes to, Glenn Close The Wife BUT there is another winner; the second tie of the night, I know MIND BLOWN. The second actress to win Best Actress is Lady Gaga!! I’m so happy she won for the movie A Star Is Born she didn’t win at the Golden Globes, but you always have to keep going and keep your head up high, because look what can happen. Her bravery and perseverance in the film make her stand out like no other. Now to the men, none of these seven nominees have won an award in this category, so this will be interesting. So, the award for Best Actor goes to, drumroll please, Christian Bale for the movie Vice. The night's final award, Best Picture, goes to drumroll again please, Roma! This is a Spanish-language drama directed by Alfonso Cuarón about the interconnected lives of two women: Cleo, a maid, and Sofia, her employer who lives in the house with her family.
Even though I don’t agree with 100% of what the critics chose tonight, I believe everyone wins for a reason. It’s important to acknowledge great films and TV shows with which people connect and develop a personal connection. That’s what it’s all about right? Connecting to the people.
