Premiere of the Masked Singer
*SPOILER ALERTS FURTHER DOWN*
It has been advertised for months and it’s finally here, the premiere of the Masked Singer! I have a little bit of an obsession with celebrities so when I saw it first advertised I knew this show would be perfect for me. It aired tonight, Jan. 2, 2019, and the overall concept of the show is that CELEBRITY celebrities dress up in the most elaborate, most extra costumes to sing no matter if they are a singer, NFL player, actor, or model the list goes on. The singers’ voices are hidden but when they sing you’re able to hear their real voices which surprisingly doesn’t give away much. The worst part about the show is that only one singer is revealed at the end of each show. Two singers compete against each other at a time with six singers throughout the show each night. Tonight there was the Peacock vs. Hippo, Monster vs. Unicorn, and Deer vs. Lion.
Every contestant has at least a little bit of a sense of music so they aren’t terrible at singing if they really aren’t a professional singer. One thing I thought that could go wrong though with that is if one of the contestants isn’t a professional singer but the person they are singing against is a professional singer and the nonprofessional singer wins, the other contestant must have to feel really bad about themselves. But it’s just a show and they will still be famous at the end of the day so I guess they are still winning. The audience votes on who they want out of the two to stay and in the end, there are three contestants in the bottom three, but only one goes home and takes their mask off.
Now to the judges. They really don’t do much but have a voice for the audience to ask the contestants questions and guess who the masked singer is. It’s a pretty mixed panel of judges and most of them haven’t even been a judge on a show like this before. They are, celeb guru Jenny McCarthy, lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls Nicole Scherzinger, singer Robin Thicke, actor Ken Jeong and host Nick Cannon.
Side note- this is where I’m writing about the winners and the overall person who unmasks. So if you don’t want any spoiler alerts DO NOT KEEP READING.
So a little insight on tonight’s episode involved two women and four men masked singers. In the first round, there was the Peacock vs. Hippo, Thicke thought it might have been Zac Efron or Jimmy Kimmel because of the flamboyance he gave off. Scherzinger said “He’s a performer,” but didn’t have a guess of who it could be. The opponent, Hippo, didn’t seem like a professional singer, Thicke said, “He’s not a trained singer, maybe an athlete?” Jeong guessed, NFL player Deion Sanders from his athletic, charismatic presence. But, the winner in this round went to the Peacock who seemed to have the better voice.
The next round was Monster vs. Unicorn. The Monster was a man who took a long break which made the judges believe he went to jail. Robin said, “His voice was full, so I think it’s a mature person, not a young person.” Because of the long break, Jeong thought it might be Justin Bieber and Scherzinger said, Gucci Mane. The competition for him was the Unicorn which was the first women's voice in the show. McCarthy put Unicorn together with unity and maturity so her guess was Madonna or Paris Hilton. Unicorn took the win in this round.
The final competition of the night was between Deer and Lion. Starting with the Deer, Robin assumed it was a wrestler or NFL player like Peyton Manning. Being he seemed to appear very muscular McCarthy didn’t think he was a professional singer but rather an athlete like UFC fighter Chuck Liddell. The Lion was the second woman in the show and seemed to be Hollywood royalty. Jeong said, “She has to be the most famous out of all the contestants; hella legit.” Thicke guessed a member of Fifth Harmony and Jenny thought Lady Gaga. The winner was the Lion in this round.
Overall, the last three standing were the Hippo, Monster, and Deer. Personally, I thought the Deer was going to go home and by the sound of the crowd, they did too. But, the loser of the night was the Hippo which ended up being no other than the receiver of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Antonio Brown. With more contestants joining the show next week, we’ll have to see who survives and who must unmask next time.
