Art isn’t just some painting or drawing we look at and not think of its beauty. Art can be as simple as a rock in a glass case or a diverse Vincent Van Gogh painting. It comes from within which makes every piece of art unique to who you are. Artists have a special way of telling a story through their work. I’ve seen so much art in my life from California to Miami to New York City, you’ll never see the same piece twice. Here are some of my favorites from the MoMA:

I try and go to New York City at least once a year and last March my mom and I decided to go for my spring break. On one of the days we were there, there happened to be a snow storm but instead of wasting our day in NYC inside our hotel, we decided to hit the Museum of Modern Art. This was our first time ever being in a museum in New York, so I had high expectations going in and it definitely did not disappoint. There is no free admission so we did have to pay, but you get access to six floors of all kinds of art ranging from paintings and sculptures to prints and illustrated books.

My favorite exhibition was one of our first stops. It was a bit strange, but very interesting and really actually beautiful how the human body can actually give birth to another human. This was the Carmen Winant, My Birth 2018. She said there were over 2,000 photos constructed from books, pamphlets, and magazines. It’s really a whole hallway of women exposed while giving birth. It shows that in a way, not every book has the same narrative. Every woman and every photograph tells a unique story to her and the moment in which the child was born.

Another one of my favorites was the exhibition of Stephen Shore’s Retrospective. Shore is a photographer that uniquely uses both analog and digital technologies. He has many photographs throughout the museum but the most eye-catching to me were these books he made from his photographs that hang from the ceiling. People are allowed to go up to them and look through them which makes it interactive and an interesting way to view someone’s work. Many of his photos come from the 60s they are very old fashion and really never posed but candid. I’d never seen art displayed in a way like this which made it interesting to experience.

Last but certainly not least, the most famous of all Vincent Van Gogh’s, The Starry Night. You know I thought it was going to be bigger than it actually was, it was only 2’5” x 3’0.” It also didn’t help that it was across from the biggest painting in the MoMA which took up the entire wall. It was so crowded it was like Van Gogh was actually there himself in the flesh, so I wasn’t able to get the best picture. Another one of Van Gogh’s was The Olive Trees, not as popular as his famous one, I was able to get a pretty good picture of it which resembled The Starry Night through its movements. It was amazing to see and hard to believe his work was right here in the United States and I had the chance to see it in person.

I highly recommend some time in your lifetime to definitely check out the MoMA if you’re in New York City sometime. It’s a whole world of sensational art that you can’t experience anywhere else. That’s what makes art so interesting and appealing, it’s one of a kind.
